Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
